It was hard to get Dad to talk about anything, much less the Merchant Marines. When he was in the assisted living facility I told him I wanted to interview him and do his biography. Being the grumpy ol’ goat that he was, he wasn’t very forthcoming about his life, but one day I lucked out and he started talking about when he was in the Merchant Marines.
His father worked on the committee that enlisted men within their district. My Dad’s older brother George was in the Army and so Grandpa Bernard suggested that my dad enlist with the Merchant Marines.

My dad didn’t see any real action, as he says it, but he did get to travel a lot. When I was helping clean out his house I came across some great pictures and wanted to share them with you.

My dad was a list maker. Weighing the pros and cons of the Merchant Marines.
