As I’ve mentioned in other blogs, I have been going through old letters that were sent between the Bernard family. In one of the letters, Grandma B was warning my dad not to marry my mom. This would be my mom’s third marriage, my dad’s second, and my mom came with an instant blended family of seven children.
As a mother of a son, I totally agree with what Grandma B was warning my dad about. My mom didn’t come with a good track record and five kids would be moving in if and when they got married.
I’m so glad that my dad wanted a big family and I am also grateful that he didn’t listen to his mother (sorry Grandma B). Mom and Dad only stayed married for 9 years. Dad got two sons and I got to grow up in Los Alamos and Bill as my dad. And for all of those reasons, I am so grateful. I know divorce is painful and hard on the kids. I remember thinking that their divorce was because of me – that I wasn’t a good kid. But as an adult I know that isn’t true. Still, pain and all, I am so glad they married.
