Letters and more letters

When we were emptying out my dad’s house to sell it, there were two large cardboard boxes that contained hundreds of letters written by his family. Initially, I was going to throw them out since it was apparent that mice had spent some time in the boxes, but I remembered what my dad had said about why he saved things.

When I’ve had some spare time I would open up several letters to read and Grandma Bernard wrote A LOT of letters. If she received a letter from a family member, she would include it with her letter and request that both be forwarded to the next family member.

It’s taken more than a year to go through the majority of the letters (I’m still not finished). I’ve enjoyed reading them and I’ve learned so much about the family and their house in Summit. I never really knew anyone from my dad’s side of the family, but after reading all the letters I wish I had known them.
